Report: Poker Night @ Pacific Edge, Romford

Just got in from a quality Poker night at Pacific Edge nightclub, in Romford, Essex. The event was a £20 rebuy/addon tournament sponsered by Jennings Poker, with 9 players from around 40 runners cashing. Read on to hear more..

As a writer of music destined for nightclubs, I obviously have a certain interest in the club scene, so when I heard there was to be a Poker tournament at one of my favourite local nightspots, I absolutely had to get involved!
The evening started with the showing of an instructional Texas Hold Em DVD, covering the real basics like hand rankings and the general flow of the game (betting & blinds etc). Only around 10-15 of the players actually bothered watching this, once again proving most people who play Poker think they're already a World beater. Apparently, the real reason for the "Poker School" theme was to get around the legalities of holding/advertising a cash tournament!
After the tuition, 40 odd players huddled around 4 tables (some had 12 to the table!) and the action got underway.

In the first hour I didn't rebuy as the place was ridiculously loose, I just sat tight and took my share of the pots, building up a nice lead on the table - at the first break, a 3000 (!) chip addon was taken by all.

I won't bore you with stories of big hands & bad beats, I'll just let you know that ultimately I finished 4th for a decent payout!

Virgin Poker WSOP bloggers freeroll tonight!

Really looking forward to this freeroll. One place in a WSOP 2006 NL event to the winner, and around 70 runners - this could really be one of the best shots I've got at Vegas this summer..

Fair enough it's not the big one - but any WSOP event has gotta be fantastic to play in and be part of.

Just received the confirmation email from Virgin:

"Thanks for registering for the Virgin Blogger’s tourney which kicks off tonight at 19.30. You are now registered and should be able to see your name in the tournament lobby.

It looks like a total field of around 70 runners, with 1st place winning a seat at the $1500 NLHE at WSOP on July 25th plus return flights and accommodation. 250,000 V points will be shared amongst places 2 – 7 as detailed below."

I wish everyone who is playing the best of luck - if you're looking for me at the tables, I'll (hopefully) be the one taking all of your chips.

A little about my Poker antics to date..

So what gives me the right to discuss age old Poker strategy, recognised playing styles, tournaments & more?

Well, for starters, I'm not setting out to tout myself as a Don of the game. Through writing about poker theory, I hope to improve my understanding of the game, and better myself as a player. If I can help a few other people do the same too, bonus.

In my short (8 month) poker "career" to date I've:
  • Earnt a good £2k+ in online tournament prize money
  • Made it through competitive online qualifying for a land-based, 9 seat final in association with VC Poker & The Sun newspaper. It was held at the Palm Beach Casino in Mayfair, London, with a car, plasma TV & laptop amongst the prizes. Admittedly, I was knocked out first.. were lessons learnt from that too!
  • Won a few international flights worth of Flying Club miles from Virgin Poker.
  • Seen my balances in online Poker rooms yo-yo..
As you can see, I'm no Daniel Negreanu.. but that's the whole point. In order to advance, I need to absorb more Poker brainfood, hence, Creative Poker.
